Hi folks,
This is a great site. I recently bought a Scott Bonnar 45 in pretty good condition and I'm just trying to find out how old it is. I can't seem to locate the engine no. but the model no. is 450580. From other post i'm guessing late 80's early 90's. I'ts paint is in pretty tidy condition and it is a slightly different green to the hammertone green of the older models. It's more of a ligther green and very smooth finish. I'll post some pics later. The previous owner of our house had a reel mower and the lawn is blue couch but has gotten a bit longer since we've had it. What I've done is cut it right back with the rotary mower and started going over it with the SB. I've also used a rake and raked up alot of the runners and cut them back as well to thin it out so I can cut it lower again. Is this the best process to get the lawn back to a lower cut height for the SB?
Any help appreciated
..

Hi Boeing,
Can't see your pic. Did you identify the date from the motor? I have a couple of 17' 45's, the later of the two (in parts in the shed) is model number 45058, and has a 1987 B&S motor - I assume is original. The older one is model number 450423 but has a newish B&S motor so I cannot date this one. It has the old round Scott Bonnar logo. I reckon it would have had a Tecumesh motor originally. Can anyone confirm my thinking.
Also can anyone give me an indication of how fast these mowers should go? Maybe I'm revving the motor too much but when I engage the drive it really takes off. I basically have to ride the clutch to run at a reasonble pace.

Hi TJ1, and a big warm welcome to the forum; it is great to have you onboard. Glad to see you are a Scotty afficionado. Also to boeing, can you please copy and paste all of the [img] string to your post so we can view the image, thanks mate. My Model 45 is model number 450520 and the original B&S was not dated by me before scrapping, as at that time I didn't know how to date from the engine serial No. The machine was purchased in 1986.It has the Scotty 'diamond' logos. The original engine had only 2 problems, one was called Briggs and the other called......... Viva La Honda!! Lol!! As regards to SB engines, Some were fitted with Kirby-Lawson, I have not seen one with Tecumseh; but definately could have been used before Briggs took over. PS. can you please post some pics of your 2 machines, as we all love to see 'em, Thanks mate.

Thanks Deejay,
I've only just stumbled onto this site this week and I've already gone back through the old posts - saw pics of your machine - truely impresive! Have you had it since new? I'm planning on doing a resto on both of mine, maybe latter in the year. Will definantely consider a Honda motor when the B&S starts to give me greif. I'll post pics on the weekend. Do you know if the cutter reel adjustment screws have changed from LH thread to RH. I've noticed spares on another website are RH thread.(?)

When I adusted mine I turned them anticlockwise to lower the cutter, where the manual said the other way. Also be careful I left it tilted back for around 30mins and just as I finished adjusting the cutter I noticed oil coming out the air cleaner. Lucky the oil was nice and clean from the oil change I had just done, but it took two hours to get it going again cause of the oil now in the carby and cylinder:(.I'll try and post some pics again but I'm not sure on how to do it..
