1973 B&S powered Masport Whirlwind Tiller. The identification on the motor is 80212 0573-01 730831. I need a new exhaust (manifold and muffler) and help on making and fitting a new air cleaner housing .
Anybody got any suggestions please?

Hello colrose

Don't bother trying to make a filter housing, head to a local mower shop and ask if they have a second hand one you could buy. Ideally, it would be a filter housing that fits ga spares foam filter AIR101 (briggs 27987s) but any other briggs filter and housing from a side valve will do.

Please oil the air filter - it works in a dusty environment

Muffler wise, the old briggs 89966 (ga spares MUF1851) will suit fine. you will need ga spares MUP764 for the muffler lock nut.

As part of the machines recommissioning, please check the gear head oil (tiller end) there is a level plug on the side and filler plug on the top. with the machine level oil should just flow out the level plug, otherwise add more through the filler.

Do not use regular oil - only masport 503335 as there are bronze gears in the head that can't use regular ep gear oil

Thanks Tyler,

The brand new muffler cost me all of $11 !!! It is also smaller than the original so it is easier to get at the carby manifold nuts.

Having trouble buying the Masport 503335 though.

Anyway all back together and big test tomorrow.

Thanks again for your help.

Most welcome Colrose

Before it gets too much use, check/change the gearhead oil as thats a pricey $300 assembly now

Penrite transoil sae140 1l bottle might be easier to procure. 1l is about $20 delivered https://automotivesuperstore.com.au/penrite-t140001?

The other option that is easier again is penrite semifluid steering box grease https://www.repco.com.au/en/oils-fl...ease-450g-cartridge-semi00045/p/A9372070

Really, so long as it has a high viscosity lubricant (that critically does not have sulfur in it) the gearbox will last a very long time.

503335 is only available through a masport dealer, Rewells mower service in castlemaine is apparently your closest.

Thats a harder one as most briggs diagrams are exploded

This might be a good source to read through though https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/60487/

A couple of photos of your set up would help if possible

Hi Tyler,
without me looking up that number is this gear oil like the 00 grease, a semi fluid grease?

Yes Norm, it is a bit thinner than 00 grease, but 00 would be fine as it just needs something
