Is Carter well regarded as well? It has Australia prominently stamped on the side. It's helped me out even without mounting it yet. There is a bigger rusty one out in the back yard that I use sometimes.
G'day Gadge, I was pretty confident it was at least decent. I looked at the link you provided. Very interesting. I like the bolted shoes of the vise I've got.
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!
I have a Carter 7" woodwork vise and a C10 scrub plane. Carter made very solid tools with heavy iron. Their smoothing and rebate/grooving planes haven't tempted me - they feel quite clunky in the hand.
A Carter engineering vise would be a decent tool I think and definitely worth restoring.
This Dawn 4 1/2 SP came from an old hero of Bundaberg......... No one could get it off the old bench, but I did.... Cleaned it up , missing one of the teeth, if thats what you call them. My father in law made one and welded it in place........as I couldn't undo any of the screws.... Anyway it works well............. Here's something interesting about the Dawn vices...... http://www.dawntools.com.au/pdf/HIS...ts_%20Golden_%20Anniversary%20_Issue.pdf
cheers speedy

Mine was pretty stuck as well - took me 40 mintutes, and one broken hammer later it was off. Was bolted through a 50 year old railway sleeper that was treated with waste oil - so no rot at all.
Thanks for that link Speedy. I've bought a Dawn 4.0S offset that looks like it may be an early example. It certainly has had a life and will need some work. Can anyone hazard a guess as to how old it may be?
