Picked up a 'Sprinter' mower with a Briggs and Stratton 300series "Made in the USA" engine. Pulled it a part to give it a good clean but can't figure out the model number.
There's no stamped information on the engine at all and the only information I have are from two stickers (see pictures)
one sticker as a serial number and QR code, the other sticker has details on engine family, but I'm having issues locating specific information from the engine family sticker.
I watched a video on the Briggs and Stratton U.S website which mentions scanning the QR code to get info, but I've tried three apps on my phone and none give any information, just a number, when searched, gives no results.
Doing a search for "Briggs and Stratton 300 series" give me this page and mentions "model 08P5". Searching this model on the B&S website gives thousands of results.
The above link / engine looks just like the one I have.
Another thing I came across and didn't expect it when pulling the engine a part, was a little section under the flywheel with two inlets/outlets, one of which goes to the air filter, the other seems to be exit only from the engine. What is this? Something to do with decompression ? There's sealant allowing the metal cover (see pic) to physically bond to it, is this just a gasket sealer ?
Hi Widget, yes the model is probably an 08P502, The first 6 digits in the serial number are the date code, in your case 2015/June/5th. You will find the model, type, code stamped into the side of the crankcase just to the right of the dipstick. Hope this helps, Ted

Hey BigTed, much appreciate the response.
The only stamping I see are 8 125. That would be too short for a model number, no ?
The model numbers will be stamped into a piece of metal, could be the muffler shroud, flywheel cowl near the spark plug or in front of the carb. The little chamber is the PCV and yes just grey gasket goo is all that is used to seal it.
Hi Widget, that's cast into the crankcase and tell us how many cc's the bore is. The numbers I'm referring to are stamped and on the flat upright side of the crankcase just to the right of the dipstick. Cheers, Ted

Nothing stamped other than the '8' and '125' near the base of the engine.

Thanks heaps Bruce. Can I ask, how did you desypher the serial on the sticker ? Bigted mentioned the first few being a date, how do you read the last few digits ?

We have a direct link to Briggs which tells us what engine model is from the serial number of the engine.

Bruce

oh, you're right. I had another look (had to look close), there's little indents making the numbers. Hard to see with all the flaking paint, had to get in close.

Oh nice, is this publicly available or do you have access due to selling B&S parts ?
Regarding the 'breather' compartment, any suggestions on what sealer/gasket maker is best to use there?
