Hello, I have a Ryobi Lawn Hornet with a Walbro carby. I used the settings information on this site and now I can start it with the choke open. It revs up and then stops. Any ideas on what may be wrong with it? Thanks

Nanda, Could be one of three things which are: 1. Blocked fuel filter in tank. 2. Blocked fuel filter in carby. 3. Carby diaphragm need replacing. Have a look at these things as I am sure that it is one of them unless it has been run on straight petrol.

Bruce, Thanks for your response. I have done the following as per your suggestion:
1. The fuel tank filter and the carby filter are clean 2. I have replaced the diaphragm. 3. I have changed the fuel to ensure that the fuel oil mix is correct.
I am able to keep it running with the choke in the run position as long as I keep squeezing the throttle trigger. When I release the throttle trigger, the engine revs up and then stops. Any further tips would be appreciated.
Thanks Nanda

Thanks Nanda Nanda, The screen in the carby is it a tight weave mesh and can you see through it? Is the carby stamped made in mexico? The answer clean as some peoples clean is different to others. Does the filter have stains at all? Let me know about these questions.

The Ryobi machines have a very weak spark, it makes it hard to get them to run at the best of times. I have been restoring or (cleaning) an old japanese machine that flashes blue spark in full sunlight! I suspect it is a Tanaka, 20 years old. It may be worth removing the carby, remove the rubber type parts and soak it in metho overnight to remove varnish build up etc. Clean the whole machine as best as you can. Just cleaning around the magneto can make a big difference to reduce power leakages. The most common problem with those machines is the pop off pressure, but when you have it going you need to have a screwdriver ready to make quick adjustments, it is good to have a friend nearby. Remove the cutting head to reduce load as the clutch kicks in. Tune it again later under load, and after warm up. With this sort of gear you have to do your own servicing to make it worthwhile. Cheers.

Thanks Bruce and Gomower. I found a leak on the engine gasket and replaced it. It is working now but lacks power on acceleration, I'll try adjusting the idle mixture screw. Thanks for your help, you pointed me in the right direction. Nanda

Nanda glad to see you worked it out. I must admit that I should have mentioned about the 4 screws that hold the carby mounting block as it was one of the first things I used to do when a repair came into the workshop. It was common with the early model Ryobi trimmers.
