Hello ODK history lovers
The famous British Qualcast mowers first appeared in England
in 1920. My research indicates that the first Qualcast mowers were
sold in Australia in 1923.

These were fully imported and distributed through Gibbs Brothers of
Sydney and Melbourne, and sold through various hardware and department
stores across Australia.

I have written about Qualcast’s rapid expansion, culminating in a
fully owned subsidiary, Qualcast Australia, that began manufacturing
on these shores in late 1930 [see Related Reading].

Here I present a small, early Australian brochure covering the
four models that were being offered in the late 1930s:

The Model H and Super Seven push sidewheels; the Panther push
reel-roller mower; and the self-propelled petrol Qualcast Sixteen.

I have dated this mower by matching range and prices from
newsprint advertising. Above is a seller’s advertisement
(John Danks and Son) from early 1939.

TO BE CONTINUED …
