The great Australian Consumers’ Association’s Choice Magazine
was first published in 1960. This ten-page article – on 2-stroke
lawnmowers – was the opening feature of the September, 1971 edition.



Nine Australian-made lawnmowers were reviewed: -

FLYMO 19” Professional with Kirby engine.
JET-FAST with Villiers engine.
PACE Premier with Victa engine.
POPE 82-185 with Pope engine.
ROVER Princess with Villiers engine.
SCOTT BONNAR Model 49 with Villiers engine.
SUNBEAM Lawnkeeper with Kirby engine.
SUPA SWIFT Galaxy with Villiers engine.
VICTA VC 160 with Victa engine.

Yes, it’s hard to realize that these mowers are now half-a-century old!

There’s a lot of information in this long article.

Consider page 1 for example. It confirms that the first Victa
decompressor engines were fitted to a non-Victa-branded
Pace Premier a season before Victa’s release.

This magazine is from my collection and in good condition.

Choice Magazine is an important historical record for
consumer goods, and they had a role to play in
developing mower safety.
