I obtained a crack free 80s Mustang engine cover
except that the label is lifting and is a bit worse for wear. The one on the damaged cover I'm replacing is in perfect condition.
Is it possible to move it over to the other one flawlessly? Would spray adhesive be a good idea?

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

MF

My best guess:

Try to gently peel good one off, lay on flat surface, use a degreaser/petrol (maybe test on bad one) to get all old adhesive off, then do as you guessed - spray adhesive.

I have managed to peel a similar vintage label off of a bad deck, and it came out fine - but watch the corners

MF maybe warm the label with a hair drier to soften old glue, try on bad one first.
A lot of labels come off when I water blast mowers, but that is a big sticker.

You can buy a brand new decal here

I have found he is very good to deal with and posts promptly.

Hi Beech,
I have dealt with him and actually helped him with pics of a couple I had for him to make reproductions of.
I ended up buying said reproduction!
I want to try this first before spending on one! It's in amazing condition especially considering the condition of the cover itself!!!

I bought new decals from this guy on ebay. silensmessor He was quick to post too

When I had motorcycles, I removed decals by spraying WD40 around them, wait a few minutes, and then using a hairdryer and razor (or similar) to peel them off. I never tried sticking them back down onto anything again though.

Solvents can work well, given time, but my method of choice here is heat applied by an electric hot air gun, used gently, or a hair dryer.

Cheers,
