G'day Max and all,
Many thanks for presenting and explaining these things.
I feel this is an important topic, and I know I have hi-jacked the original
topic - so much of this topic will be moved to Tech Talk

Quote
The patent mentions when cutting a fine lawn you are better off having the cutter plate parallel with the ground.
I note that when I read the patent.
I guess it indicates that, with the addition of single-point height
adjusters, a compromise was made that set a single angle of attack.
I mean, a 1/4" [6mm] height difference between front and rear blade
tips is only about a degree or so.

Max, I have said on these forums that the single-point adjuster was
an Australian invention - and I think Minter were the first.

Do you have any thoughts on that?

That's a great story on boomerangs.
Just like the Wright brothers, who observed how birds fly, out
first Australians must have perfected the boomerang after decades
- or centuries - of observation, trial and error.

And I mean, what kid didn't stick their arm out of a moving car and
rotate hands for angle of attack. My mother thought I was being silly!
Dad knew - and understood ...

I saw one patent which had an addition to the cutter assembly, to stop long grass ,vines ,etc from wrapping around the cutters and cutter bar shaft .
Max, the best idea I ever saw for this was on a Yazoo,
made in North America's deep South. We sold a lot of those here.

It was a metal cup placed above the blade holder.
The top edge was serrated to cut off grass bents that would
wrap around the spindle. It kept grass away from bearings and seal.
Simple and effective!

Cheers

Hi Jack + all,

Hmm ,the single point height adjuster an Aussie invention , I've traced that back to 1947.(filed date)

George W Daggett, Meadville Pennsylvania , USA

I have wondered if the first Australians invented the boomerang by trial and error or
could it be possible to find a piece of wood roughly the right shape to begin with,
possibly a piece of drift wood that split in half ,did someone just pick up a stick
and it flew in the air when it was thrown?,who really knows? The boomerang was certainly
improved over many years..

Yes most kids tried the flying arm trick out the car window.

I think I have a copy of the Yazoo patent showing that metal cup.

Cheers
Max.

A couple more interesting USA patents ,one with triple blades 1940 , one fully skirted rear discharge 1933.

G;day Max
Again, many thanks for helping us understand mower evolution.

I have noted the Daggett patent of 1947.
I guess it never went into production...

There's the catch Max ...
For me, it is rare for an 'invention' to start from nothing. I can't think of any case of that...
Everything seems to have started from some empirical evidence - some observation.

No rotary without a hand scythe; no hand scythe without the sword or knife;
no sword or knife without a sharp edge ... Sharp edges occur in nature... ?

A similar situation with the reel mower.

I love the other crazy patents.
I have recorded the second one - the Frey of 1928.
The Durkee of 1925 is as crazy as ... [attached]

The USA fostered such creativity in lawnmowers.
I guess that's why they ruled the world in hardware from the late 19th century.

The British - with a rigid class system - stifled invention.
The North American model - of a classless society - fostered invention.

I note our Australian 'ironmonger' stores became 'hardware' stores at that time.
No surprises there.

Cheers

G'day Jack,

Thanks for those reel crazy patents, I've seen few other crazy reel patents.

The Goodall early blades looked like they were swing back blades when I first saw them because of
the bolts that held them in place but they look like the outer edges of the blades are pined, meaning
the bolts are just for ease of blade replacement.

The 1945 Yazoo patent shows swing back blades ,also I heard a rumour that the Yazoo would not pass
USA safety standards (no longer made in the US) so of course it is now sold in Australia under the name Red Roo.

Cheers
Max.

Glad the restoration of my whirlwind can lead to the sharing of knowledge when it comes to all types of cutting blades. Me personally never knew there was so many types and designs to achieve different sorts of cuts.
I'll sneak in on last quick photo of the whirlwind the decal I ordered arrived in the mail the other day. Finished it off nicely.

Hi Lorenz and all, yes I agree the Whirlwind decal finishes off this slasher nicely .

Below was the reason the Yazoo was dangerous (the blade didn't stop within the required three seconds after release of the controls.)

I assume the Red Roo mower isn't made now.

Cheers
Max.
