Good point MF about the sidepull being slightly geared down but then I have never had any problems with any of the F/C cup starters on them and I have probably had more of those than side pulls

Well there are plainly other factors at play. I remember taking the blade carrier off my dad's Waltons 160 FC with cup starter and it was tougher to pull but never any kick back. It felt like starting a scaled up whipper snipper.
I think it's just the way the PT is. Your mileage may vary.
It would be nice if you could figure out a way to modify them enough to stop the problem, but in the meanwhile a deliberately ginger pull of the rope or using a tired PT with less compression might help! They don't need to be as powerful with the 2:1 ratio of the belt driven Blade disc.
P.S : It could be the way t the PT starter engages on the conrod and remains locked on when the piston bounces back. The FC cup starter strictly engages one way, that is the starter pawls can't grip the cup when the motor moves the other direction from the piston bounce, whereas the PT starter continues to grip the bouncing engine whilst tension remains on the rope.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

I always thought that the 24 needed a decent pull to get the blade disc spinning. They kick because they fall backwards on the last compression stroke then they fire trying to run backwards hence the violence. Mine only does it when flooded.
I'm sure the belt does not slip
Too tight if anything.

Why? Beats me. My brother reckons just to hold the rope nearly right out tightly after pulling seems to help but ours is not that bad.

Maybe try an FC decompression valve. They should screw in OK.

Keep at it Norm. We need a fix for this one

Jeff

MF,
I don't think I have been caught with a kickback on a cup starter but I'm pretty sure if you tried to start one with a loose blade carrier it would quickly let you know.
