This has absolutely nothing to do with outdoor power equipment, but I'm giving mowers a bit of a miss and doing something totally different to what you guys are used to seeing from me.
A full restoration of a set of "Celestion SL6" Speaker system.
I picked these up for $50 and they were in much the same state as my Verti-Cutter was prior to the Rise of the Phoenix thread.
I forgot to take any before shots but I'm sure you can picture what unloved timber looks like with damaged corners and bady scratched up outer surfaces.
Anyway here they are pictured below with only Sanding Sealer applied this morning before the weather turned ugly late today. They now need to be lightly sanded back with 800 grit and then timber finished in Satin using Feast Watson products.
After that I will need to recover the grilles as they had tears in them. They were originally in Brown material but I'm thinking I might do those in Black as Brown just looks a tad dated and even Celestion themselves changed to black later on during production of subsequent model SL series speakers. BTW the SL6 was the original version of this variant and now can fetch up to around $600 plus.
Tell me what you think as I'd like as many opinions as possible.

Looking good BB, bit hard to tell how they looked before. I just set up what was a pigeon hole type cabinet and I pulled 2 of the dividers out and made up 20 drawers so I can put parts in. Sadly I did the same as you I didn't take any before shots so it is always hard to imagine what bit looked like.
Yep I can relate to that time and time again. Oddly everytime I start a project I do exactly the same thing..................get straight into it and only when I'm halfway through I think about taking a photo so that others can see what's been done. I guess I'm not that much of an exhibitionist of what exactly do.
The first time I've ever documented any project from start to finish was the "Rise like the Phoenix" Verti-Cutter and even that I had already disassembled all the drive train of it when I remembered I should take some photos as it was. I also could've taken a lot more as the project went along, but didn't, thus why a few parts of the process seem to be missing in pictures.
Like I said I'm no exhibitionist.

Sorry I haven’t been around lately but this year has been a cracker so far. Just a recap, January we fell victim to the bushfires and to this day I’m still waiting for fences sheds, gates and other stuff to be repaired and rebuilt. February saw floods and we had front and back waterfront views not to mention the flood going through the fire rubble. March saw a pandemic and now I’m a prisoner in my own home.
BB this project might be a bit different for ODK but in this ever so changing world what’s normal? I like the fact you have done something different to share to inspire us and with everything going on this year there’s no way I can start any long term mower projects to share with you guys. Hopefully next year everything’s on track as I got at least 5 machines to work on. I love your passion BB and dedication, a few weeks ago I built an old school component stereo speaker system so the wife could play some records. I had all the components laying around except for the amp which I bought online and figured it was only appropriate to surf the net for some period Japanese speakers instead of hooking up a pair of Chinese ones I had laying around. I’m glad you shared this as not all of us can do mowers in this challenging time.
For the topic here is the system I built and the Japanese Pioneer S-Z81D speakers I picked up for it.
Would love to see what other projects people are up to non mower related during is lonely time.
I gave all my stereo bits to my 20 year old grandson about 6 weeks ago, before all this lockdown started. It was all the silver fronted stuff that we bought in the mid seventies, Pioneer amp,turntable ,radio, tape deck, speakers all in perfect working condition. He was very eager to grab it, maybe he knew something was coming.
No LOL !.........he knew how much it is sought after nowadays Norm.
Currently there is a huge boom happening with Silver fronted stereo gear and it's fetching way over the top money, but many are getting burnt by thinking everything silver is worth heaps, well how wrong some folks are. It's all about certain pieces and mostly TOTL gear and definitely not the entry level stuff, but as such most newbies are the ones getting burnt with their over enthusiastic approach that they all seem to have whether it be 1970's~80's cars, vintage HiFi gear or Scott Bonnar anything.

It's not only vintage mowers that are becoming popular again, I have noticed some of these vintage hi fi equipment are very sought after especially the stuff from the 70's and the Pioneer stuff from that era was at its best and very sought after now. Vinyl is making a comeback and the old LP players from the 70's-80's are now fetching a few dollars. To be honest I don't even know if you can walk into a shop and buy a hifi stereo these days, kids of today don't really know what it's like to listen to music the way it should be heard.
It may be worth considering getting the existing drivers re-coned, so long as the voice coils are OK. The rolled cone surrounds tend to disintegrate with age, and modern cone/surround units offer quite an improvement in sound quality, too.
My old speakers were just Technics ones [pretty low-end], so I went for a pair of new VAF Research DC-X G4 speakers [made in Adelaide!], some few years back.
I did order the assemble-it-yourself kit they offered back then tho' - a saving of ~$700 or so [IIRC] for around 1.5 hours of [carefully done] work was a bit of a no-brainer!

Hi BS, I had just bought a new TV and when I went to put it in the wall unit there was this mass of cables in the back of the unit. Over the years the kids had added extra cables for DVD,CD players etc so it was a real mess. I could not understand why my grandson would have been remotely interested in the old stuff but now I know why. Anyway I hope he appreciates it and doesn't just flog it all off.
