Hi all,
An old guy called me to see if I wanted to pick up his old mower and have it for nothing. He said it is a Supaswift alloy based 18 inch pushmower with a briggs engine (he said it was a 'Big Briggs and stratton engine'. we shall see). Says it still runs but is rough, so that is all good. I am sure a new gaskets, oil, fuel, air filter will fix her up. But he has left it outside for god knows how long, and says a wheel has fallen off. When asked for more detail, he said the axle needs welding or replacement, so I assume it has been rusted out.
So, before laying an eye on the thing, I just wondered whether other brands axles can often be used on other mowers? eg; the stubborn Rover I have is still giving me issues, so perhaps the axles on that might be a substitute? Or do different mowers have vastly different axle setups?

Hi Sapper,
SupaSwift are a great mower and a nice little Aussie company that could. According to NormK, SS and other brand mowers beside Victa seem to use a standard axle stub diameter smaller than Victa's unique thicker axle. The beauty of SupaSwift is they seem to use some components common to other makes. Victa front axle clips fitted on mine which had one missing. It takes Victa 18" blades as well. You may find Rover, Masport and SS may take the same axles. Not sure there. I used a bearing out of a Sanli mower to replace the badly worn nylon sleeve on the wheel of my 1980s SS. It's a great trouper now with a vertical pull Briggs.
It's hard to turn down a mower being offered free. I just hope for the sake of your relationship you don't keep getting offers!
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Thanks MF,
I thought it would be a "Yes, but" answer. I will get around there and check it out as soon as I get the chance, but I will probably pick it up. When I have it, I will report back.

Hi Sapper, If you are thinking you can swap an axle assembly complete from one type to another, I have never found 2 the same. I have cut and shut axles to make something fit but it all takes time and patience and a bit of welding skill, not something you can just stick together. I have on a number of occasions cut the axle stubs off the Victas and welded on new 1/2 inch stubs using a set of wheels to suit, just because I can't get enough good Victa wheels

Hi Norm,
I hear you. I thought it wouldn't be a simple operation, but thought I would check with you guys first. I will assess the damage when I see the mower, and report back

Meant to click in the box and hit the 'tweet' button on top, so hate to think what I have done
My supaswift big bob apparently takes Honda wheels, so maybe the stub on yours are the same diameter if you need to track down a new stub.
They are very strong mowers
But as Norm has said, hard to get the stub welded
BTW Norm, my private messages aren't working right. Did you get the one about the 2 victa utes really cheap in belgrave?

Hi Tyler, I didn't get the message, but I was all over it 2 hours after they were listed, I said I would take both, then he said for me to pay it by paypal and they would be mine. Seemed a bit odd to want me to pay up front like that on gumtree so I said I didn't know how to do that and I would prefer to pay him cash. He then sent me a message with a paypal invoice and said I could only have one because he had promised the other one to somebody else. I just said to him that if I didn't get both I wouldn't bother driving over there for just one mower.

NormK I gather be wanted it as an anti no show insurance policy as he had another possible willing buyer lined up. Maybe you should have taken the punt.

I agree Norm, not worth the hassle.
If you get a message tomorrow saying 'it fell through you can have the 2 now' I'd say 'Ok, but my offer is now $15' haha
