Hi All,

I have 350sqm lawn at home that is compacted in some areas. I'm looking at hiring a corer this weekend from my local hire shop, and using Eco-Growth products from my local irrigation shop. See below for my plan of attack, feel free to comment on the process/products.

1. Morning Water
2. Mow Low
3. Core the lawn
4. Apply Eco-Wet Soil wetter
5. Fertilise with Eco-Prime Emerald
6. Afternoon Water

We are expected to have 4 consecutive 40deg days this week - thurs to Sun. Am i better off leaving this task for a cooler weekend? ( i dont mind the heat, but want the best results for my lawn)

I am planning to leave the plugs on the surface to break down naturally. Am i better off to rake them in or remove totally?

Should I top dress with a lawn mix as part of my process, or just leave the cores open?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Falcon,

First things first, don't do it with the projected heatwave coming. That's the number one rule for doing anything invasive to a plant of any variety.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi Falcon,

I agree, I’d avoid the heat if possible. Also, see if you can get hold of a billy goat aerator from billy goat hire Perth - seem to be an easier machine to use, and better than the bluebird style units in my opinion. What kind of grass do you have? It will help to know what it is especially if you are doing a low mow. The eco growth products are great, I use eco wet every fortnight and eco prime purple every 4 weeks (at 24g/sqm) as part of my program. I have use emerald in the past, and will again. It is great too. I personally would remove the cores, and if you were to top dress I would use organic compost, clay etc. I would only use sand if levelling was necessary, as I’m assuming your soil is basically gutless sand down there anyway. There are some good mixes - hills organic supplies have a lawn and vegetable mix which is composted cow and sheep manure with kaolin clay in the mix. There is also stuff from green life soil, poo2you, and I’m sure there are many others.

Cheers,

John

Also, if you are going to use a soil wetter, soak the area before applying, then water it in with about 6mm if water. Then do the same procedure a few days later. This will help alleviate the hydrophobic soils we get in Perth for a while. Then you can apply soil wetter as required - fortnightly, monthly etc. Ideally sync the applications up on your watering days
