From the earliest days of Victa being an engine maker it has
been clear to me that Merv Richardson was keen to see his little
engines used on non-Victa equipment.
And this is what indeed happened. In the 1950s, unbranded
Victa engines started to appear on lawnmowers not made by Victa.
It is not clear to me whether Merv did this out of spite [Villiers], pride,
or profit. Perhaps it was a combination of all these things…
By about 1960, Victa was out-in-the-open in making ‘Tiger’ power
units in horizontal and vertical configurations for various power
equipment manufacturers.
This comprehensive
Power Units User and Parts Manual dates from
the
early to mid-1970s, certainly printed after Victa upgraded its engines
to decompressor designs. This was the age of ‘ZIP-starting’!
