Half thinking about getting a little chainsaw for around the home.
Prefer petrol. Was looking at MS170/171/180/181 or even a used 192, but wouldn't mind something a bit older. Part of that reason is that I'm happy to tinker to get it back up to scratch.
Anyone running, preferably, an 009L? How's parts availability? Reliability? We did run an 024 many moons ago, but I'm not super familiar with the 009/009L. They seem to have a decent rep.

009 is basically an arborist saw, designed for one handed use up a tree, You'll want something a bit bigger generally. As with everything these days rubber gets old and perishes, so they are quite common for doing crank seals. I haven't worked for a stihl shop for about 6 years but back then parts were getting harder to get for the old stuff. air filters and carb kits are fine but anything like starter related you could almost forget it. Also they never had any anti vibe mounts so they kill you're hands if you're using it often.
Personally I steer way clear of the German stuff, I much prefer shindaiwa, even the small huskys.
It's almost like Stihl couldn't make up their mind with the 009L. Not quite conventional, not quite top handle! Lack of AV not a huge deal breaker, it's probably not going to get extended cuts. Had a look at on 010AV but the 009L has more power in the same package.
The Germans haven't let me down yet but I'm happy to look at others, especially Japanese stuff. I'm looking for well built, light, and powerful 30-40cc running 12-16" bar. I think my pole saw is running a 3/8 PM chain but will confirm. New/used ok. Not in a massive rush so can wait for Gumtree finds to pop up. What can you suggest to look at?

Mystyler, I paid $85 for a little 12 inch saw a couple of years ago, it has been a fantastic little machine, I use it one handed all the time cutting up pallets for firewood. I bought it wanting it to do one job cutting the top off a palm tree that I was not prepared to cut using my big Stihl above my head. Since then I have used it so much and for that price if it gave up now I could not complain and I would race out and buy another one. I think it is called a TDKMAN. I don't think your pole saw would be a 3/8th chain
Out of my smaller saws I find my husqvarna 136 is my "go to" for pruning, trimming, cutting pallets up for kindling and smaller logs of firewood. I do have an 009 (I think or it could be an 010) always been a good saw but rarely used now. I just found the feel of the husky better..
Cant say much about echo, the ones I own are still bearing the mobilco echo tags, and run in the 70cc plus range. I would really hope the newer ones are at least half the weight of these beasts.
Hi Joe, appreciate the input. Especially as my limited reading on the 136 said it wasn't up to much - I got the feeling much of that was other brand fanbois. A few of those 136s kicking around for not many dollars.
The Echo I was looking at is the CS-2511. Looks like a ripper light weight saw if I go new.

I'm trying to get a Stihl 009 going................ No spark, so I checked the coil air gap, good, and wires etc. I ended up buying a cheap ebay coil for $10, still no spark...... Put it aside for months..... it dawned on me, it's electronic ignition, couldn't find the module, so I thought it must be incorporated in the coil. That's why the new one didn't work as it didn't have a module....... Next I am going to try a victa module with the new coil......... Any ideas?? Speedy

Haven't got around to it yet but I have no doubt it will work.
The voltage you need to zap a spark plug is pretty constant over models, and timing of zap is controlled by coil position, so I can't see any reason it wouldn't trigger properly
Hi Tyler, Any 4 stroke that has the spark controlled by a crank trigger is a wasted spark, anything with a distributor doesn't because the distributor runs at half crank revolutions
OK, I connected a victa module, just bodgied to see if I had spark, yes.... So I fixed the module in a position and held saw in vice, and applied electric drill to clutch side, it revved, felt very dangerous as it was just holding....... Now I have just got to put it together and mount the module, maybe in front as there is not much room....... speedy

I finally put an Australian Atom module on, as I could hide in inside because it is small., it came off the 8hp Briggs. Anyway it fired up with starter. So I'd had enough, then came back next day, cleaned carb pretty easy. It fired but not well... Maybe a new carb..... I'm sick of it....... speedy
