Well, another win, threw an old car battery on the seat and precariously held the wires (with wet dirty lugs), onto the terminals, gave the starter half a dozen clicks, nothing, few sparks at the negative, re-position lugs, half a dozen more clicks, then half an engine turn, then sparked to life! I call that a win! Worth buying a battery that'll fit now.
