OK, the tank mounting point has been broken out of the aluminium casting that forms the top of the tank. Looks as if someone has tightened the retaining bolt with the tank and carburetor assembly not properly in position. I see no reason why the substitute tank should not work except for the replacement tank lacking the feature circled in yellow:

At the moment I don't know what that feature is for.
