Update: I tested the spark and it was going fine, firing well. Then i poured some fuel down the spark plug hole and she started! for a few seconds..

Then I refitted everythind again and again she would not start. I stripped the carby primer cap again and replaced it with another one and she started!

so it looks like it was the primer bulb or perhaps the needle that was the issue.
