first NOT the voice of experience here but since you "?"
(I dont have much of a clue at all really well practical wise)

on Different spark Plugs?

on a bit of searching
Champion CJ8 (some here prefer to use NGK BM6A I think it is)
was pretty much it 1980 to 98

but seems 1998 a few different ones may have been used
(motor changes, Eco more friendly and moving production I suppose)

1998 ~2002 RCJ8Y (Champion) *
2002 ~2004 RCJ14H (Champion)...your era motor 2003 *

2004 ~ NGK BPMR4A (seems you can use this backwards to 98)*

here's the NGK meaning of all the digits
http://www.ngk.com.au/sparkplug.php#

(* all are resistor types)

now I did read somewhere that a hotter plug
(and 4 means hotter in NGK)

might lead to less fouling of the plug
(and down sides no idea)
but well its hear say to me and could really mean Ducks walk backwards too..

Although it kinda fits the logic of the less customers annoying you with problems the better.....
so maybe

I'll leave that to someone that knows and this is only info I gather off the net..so I wouldn't say its gospel

but hope that helps with the "Plug ? mark"

Cheers smile

Edit: Side point
humm rather interesting reading the last part of this on spark plug with resistors

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinfo/spark_plugs/faq/faqresistor.asp

Quote
-------
In fact, using a non-resistor plug in certain applications can actually cause the engine to suffer undesirable side effects such as an erratic idle, high-rpm misfire, engine run-on, power drop off at certain rpm levels and abnormal combustion.

electronic control I guess..they mean

Not that Id think a 2 stroke would care...but interesting
(I'll stand to be corrected thought)

This does raise the question though
to me anyway where in lies the difference in year the 1998
why they stated only backward till then...

if the Engines haven't really change
and well I got a funny feeling now the original
in mine was RCJ8Y...
couldn't get one and have been using CJ8's
I know ours was pre 2K a year or two on the dial
Anyway another side point

Again Cheers smile
