I've seen them both ways Norm on different motors and seen manuals that say typically the Red Wire,: this is usually the AC power output for the lights. It provides the unregulated AC voltage directly to the lighting system or any other AC accessory.

So it’s important to note that while this is the common wiring practice, you should always refer to the specific service manual for your engine model to confirm the correct wiring configuration, as variations may exist based on the particular application or model year.

Voltage Testing:

If you have a multimeter:
Start the engine and measure the voltage output directly from each wire on the stator (AC voltage).
The wire that provides a consistent AC voltage (typically more than 12V AC) under load is the output for lighting, while the other wire is the input to the rectifier/regulator.
