I hate the black soot as well MF - but its next to impossible to get off - this one was actually chunky black
The later ones had the little sheet metal deflector on the exhaust outlet, but they still do soot up
I think if put on the way it should be (spark plug front) the tank would cut into the high arch by about 5 mm.
How do I know - I saw the result of someone doing it. They angle ground part of the arch out to fit the tank in
