SB Model 45 Resto

I finished this project a couple of seeks ago so thought that I'd show everyone the finished product. Various new bits and pieces and a regrind on the cylinder. Now waiting for a reasonably priced Honda or Chonda.

Does that mean you're planning to ditch the Tecumseh/Kirby? It is an engine I dislike, but originality has its benefits, and those Tecumsehs at least seem to have been durable. Why replace it?
Nice work, BTW. Another successful SB restoration.

The engine does keep chugging along but its noisy as hell, uses a fair bit of fuel and had a chip off the keyway from the crankshaft. You may recall the photo I posted about a month ago whilst I was disassembling the mower. Its not a high priority but I will update when the right engine comes along.

OK, I agree that crankshaft is a goner, and those old Tecumsehs are unlovable anyway. I have nothing against the Honda engines, even a Chinese one would be a breath of fresh air after the Tecumseh, but keeping an eye open for an old horizontal crankshaft Briggs that had nothing much wrong with it, would potentially give you an original-type engine that runs well. It might be a lot cheaper, too. (It would make a whole lot more exhaust noise than a modern Honda, though. Just think of that as a genuine original feature of the mower.)

Hi Stu, my congrats on the restoration. She looks like a bought one. grin
As a Honda powered SB 45 owner, if you are going to use this machine, and originality is not an issue, then Honda is definately the way to go....and to put a Briggs on it....well, that won't be the original engine either. wink
For me as a user, functionality beats originality. Especially as the Scott Bonnar Model 45 is so popular...just check out eBay. smile

Hi Stu 45,

Love the finsish on your restored 45. May I ask what green paint did you use and how you applied it. Possibly you have already posted this info on the forum but I am looking at the thread that starts with your photos - so, sorry if I am asking you to repeat yourself

Sorry about the late reply Brian. It is green hammertone that I picked up from Bunnings. It seemed to be fairly close in colour and comes out in a nice hammertone finish. Hoe this helps.

Hi Stu45, It's been a while since you posted, did you source a new engine for your Scotty?
