Hi all,
Wondered if there was such a thing as a service manual for a 450810 Scott Bonnar Mower.
I have downloaded the owners manual from the Rover website and have the spare parts manual - cannot for the life of me find a service manual however?
Anyone able to help me out?
Thanks.

Hi Dave, an a warm welcome to the forum. grin It's great to have another Scott Bonnar owner on board.

As far as I know, and I have asked a good mate who was a dealer, no service manual was produced for the Model 45.

Briggs and Stratton have a manual for the engine, but for the chassis, they are really very simple to work on, with a set of spanners, screwdrivers and a three leg gear puller, the machine itself can be completely disassembled quite easily, and with all parts being still available, repairs can be made by replacement if necessary, for a person of basic skills.

The owners manual covers most adjustment procedures, and the spare parts list comprehensive.
If you have any questions, we have members on this site to help you achieve a good result. All you have to do is post, preferably with pics of the area of concern. wink

Once again Dave, :welcome:

Hi Deejay, Thanks for the help in regards to a service manual for scotty 45.
I have just purchased two 17" model 45's, so will be doing rebuild on both in the coming weeks. one has a 1986 3hp briggs & stratton with no catcher and the older of the two has a 1977 2.5hp briggs & stratton. This older one has me stumped as the catcher has a craftsman decal and has straight handle bars. The catcher does look a little different in colour though.. so please help? Is this the original catcher decal? If not do you know what it should be for both. I could not find any info about craftsman 45's.. I will upload pics when i get a chance.. Can't wait to start the rebuilds.. Cheers....

Hi Dave, we need you to post some pics so as we can help identify the older one....could you give us the info on the SB ID plate, that might shed some light on it...you may have a Model 33 there, with the straight handle bars.

"Craftsman" could have been a "store branded" machine for sale in department stores. wink I will do some research for you. grin

Hi Deejay, Hope these pics help identify my scotty. The first three pics are of the older 77 model (2.5hp B&S-engine 80102-0233-01-7704-2201) followed by the newer 86 model (3hp B&S-engine 82232-0315-01-8612-0903). I will be painting these old beauties so would like to replace with the original decals on both models. So could you tell me if the craftsman decal is original or not, that would be a great help.. As for the newer 86 model there is no decals at all so have no idea what they should be.. Also next to the SB ID plate the Numbers PB161249Q (I think) is etched into the chasis rail, do you have any clue as to what they mean?? If both restored in your opinion what's the best model to keep as i only need one...
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave, well you have definitely got me tossed here, I have done some research for you and am stumped. Nobody I spoke to has ever heard of the name "Craftsman" be applied to a Model 45.
The plot thickens further with the pic...It has the "pram" style handlebars of the Scott Bonnar Model 45 "Lawn King" (Model Number 450546) which is different to yours (450810) which is the model number on BOTH your machines.... WTF

The Briggs and Stratton 2.5HP on the early machine is correct for its age, but the Briggs I/C engine on the second machine would be a replacement engine in my opinion. The numbers etched into the engine rail are not original and may be an "inventory" number of the contractor or company that owned the machine previously.

Here's what we do know....Both are genuine 70's model Scott Bonnar 45's.
We know that by the 2 rail engine deck, I presume vertical screw alignment on the chain-case cover (ie. top and bottom), plastic black knobs on the grass deflector and plastic end-caps on the front roller.

Here's what I would have a think about....Rather than purchase a new handlebar assembly ($$$) for the "Craftsman", I would consider painting it hammertone blue and restoring it as a Lawn King which has that style of handle.

The second machine, paint that in the original hammertone green.
Decals are available on E-bay...just type in Scott Bonnar decals. The one you want for the second machine is the triangular one shown here, from my catcher.... [Linked Image]

As for which one to keep...choose to one with the less wear and tear..In other words, when inspecting under the chain-case cover, check the condition of chains and sprockets (for pointy teeth)....the cylinder reel..check for the one with the most "meat" on the blades (top of the blade to where it attaches to the reel spider)this indicates less spin-grinds....the bottom blade for wear....

As for the engine...I'm sure that grumpy (our resident Briggs guru) will jump in and explain all about the differences there.

Just remember that all parts on the 2 chassis are inter-changeable....choose the best from each to re-build the
"keeper" wink

Hi Deejay and thanks for your help..

Thought you would be stumped about the Craftsman.. I don't know why the model numbers are the same on both??
Not sure if you can explain this one.. I really thought the Craftsman was all original (maybe not)? The paint on the catcher is a solid green and the paint on the chassis is hammertone, so maybe it's a ring-in or it's been repainted??. still doesn't explain the straight handle bars????...

Maybe I'm just too fussy trying to keep them as original as possible...

Cheers..
