Hi Guys,
I am looking to replace the carb on a 2001 Hayter Ranger mower. The owner had filled it with 2 stroke and the carb cannot be adequetlty cleaned for the engine to run as it should.
I have ID'd the engine as a B&S Quantum XLT45 and the carb has a choke rather than a primer bulb.
For whatever reason I am really struggling to find the correct replacement carb to fit this engine!!
There are many of the primer type but very few with the choke setup. Please could anyone help in the ID of the carb please???
Also is it possible to change the fitting on the choke of the new card to the one on the old carb so the cable will work as it currently does with the old carb fitted?
Thanks Guys..

Hi KB. I suggest that the easiest way to remove the oil residue is to clean the original carburetor properly, with a spray can of carburetor cleaner. They are supplied with a long, small-diameter tube so you can blast through each drilling and recess in the carburetor. Do not use it on the elastomer parts - it will age them somewhat - and blow the residue of the cleaner from each passage with compressed air.

Many mower carburetors are exposed to 2 stroke mix at some time, but it does them no lasting harm and can usually be sorted out just by switching to clean fuel and putting up with some mildly erratic behaviour for a short time. If you are having issues that last beyond using, say, one tank of clean fuel, I do not think the problem is due to 2 stroke mix. More likely there is water or gum in the carburetor, and it needs to be cleaned out.

Hi thanks grumpy,
I have cleaned out the old carb with carb cleaner. But when I have re assembled the mower still won't run. It will start on full choke but die when the throttle lever is moved towards the run setting. It will cut out even on full choke after a while.
The carb really was in bad condition with both the choke and throttle plates stuck solidly.
Would I be right in saying that as it runs to an extent on full choke then the carb is supplying to much air and not enough fuel?
I think the small jet in the centre of the carb is the problem. The larger one I can see is clear but the small was badly blocked and not even the carb cleaner seems to be solving the issue.
Is there anything else you could suggest?

Yes, it is running lean if it will run with choke, but not without. It sounds as if the main jet or emulsion tube is partly obstructed by dirt or more likely, gum, though there are several other possibilities. Until you post the Model, Type and Code of your engine, I won't know whether it has the Walbro LMS or Walbro LMT carburetor, so please supply the information. Then, once we go through the process for cleaning the jet and emulsion tube, if the problem still exists we can look at more esoteric issues.
