HI all

.. just got a Scott Bonner model 45 with a B&S 2.5hp mtr today and was hoping to find a manual so I can get a good understanding of it. If it is the right place I have a couple of questions someone may know the answers to:
a) When I increase the revs with the blades in the neutral position they engage - is that OK
b) Is it OK to "ride" the clutch as when it is left fully out it runs away from me
c) how serious is a crack under the motor mount as I noticed this tonight ?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask... Cheers Garry

Hi Garry, and a warm welcome to the forum. grin
It's great to have another Scott Bonnar Model 45 owner on board, as we all like to learn new things and tinker here. wink
You have posted in the correct area, well done!

Now to your questions;
A Scott Bonnar manual and parts list is available in the Lawnmower Parts List and Repair Manuals topic in the Questions on Lawnmower Frames area. Access to this area is by subscription. Just click on the second post in any topic on the main forum page, for instructions on how to access...easy peasy!

(a) Cylinder reel moving whilst the cutter clutch is disengaged is definitely not OK....Providing that the clutch is serviceable, it just needs adjustment.

(b)It is perfectly OK to ride the clutch, in fact, they are designed to do exactly that....Just squeeze the handle enough to give you a steady walking pace that feels comfortable to you.

(c) Without seeing the machine, I would suspect it is the later model of 45 with the twin rails for motor mounting. These are renowned for cracking due to vibration. There are various methods of repair, we will go through those at a later stage. Could you pleas post some pics of the Scotty, as we all like to see them, and will help us diagnose your prob.

Once again Garry, :welcome:

Hi
Thanks for the info - I will arrange a couple of photo's - but be warned she is no oil painting! Is the clutch adjustment straight forward?

Hi Garry, yes mate the adjustment is straight-forward, but if you are contemplating subscribing to the manuals area, now would be the time to do it. Reference to the various parts would be a lot easier to describe, if you have the manual in front of you.

Basically it requires the cutter clutch cone to move inward to disengage completely, when the lever is in the disengaged position. wink

Can I ask how much you paid and where you got it from GOC? I've got my eye out for one at the moment. The cheaper ones go quickly. Good luck with your new baby.

HI - got it for $200, I only have a small area to do so didn't want to spend too much. I adjusted the nut for the clutch last night and it seems to of done the trick. Your right you have to get on to them very quickly.

Glad to see that you got that sorted, are you going to restore the machine?
