Hi all,

Great to finally become a registered member after many months of reading through the great material on this forum.

I have just been given an SB45 17 inch reel mower, which I would like to bring up to spec and restore. From looking at other posts on the forum I believe my mower is a 1989 model?

My main concern is the condition of the reel and bed knife. Everything feels very blunt and there are some nicks and knocks taken out of the reel and bed knife which concern me. I don't mind replacing the bed knife as they are only ~$70 but I'm lead to believe that a replacement reel is somewhere in the vicinity of $450. Does this look salvageable?

Also is the top section of the handlebars hard to source? I've been searching and searching and haven't had much luck tracking one down.

Hi Gunmetal,

Hey don't stress, this is all perfectly salvageable, the reel that is which as you've already acknowledged is the expensive part.

The bends can be easily straightened by a experienced engineer and the reel re-ground giving you a as new finish as the reel has heaps of metal on it.
As far as the bed knife is concerned it's curtains for that. Please ensure you let your engineer remove the blade from the sole plate as he has the know how without running the risk of cracking the cast iron structure which is really costly to replace if that became the case.

I'd say that the machine is all pretty original and is a 17 inch and not a 14 as you originally suggest, yes I've already changed that in you post.
