Hello ODK Event Lovers
The Wooden Boat Festival is held in Hobart every 2 years.
It provides a great atmosphere, being held at Sullivans Cove on the Hobart
CBD waterfront.

You can be a mower luvin land lubber and still enjoy this event. I love it!
Let me run you through my highlights: first - ships.

A number of Tall Ships visited this year.
The highlight was Sydneys 19th Century James Craig. I did the tour and was
suitably impressed. She was rescued from her resting place in Recherche Bay in
far southern Tasmania a couple of decades ago.

I couldnt find any lawnmowers on board, though I wondered whether one was ever
aboard in its century plus career I guess it must have had at least one stowaway.
I will have a restless sleep tonight thinking about that. Here are my arty images
from today.

PART TWO - The Steamer Cartela
The steamer Cartela wasnt there, but the engine was.
This is a local project involving the restoration of an early 20th century steamer.

[Linked Image]

The engine wasn't Titanic size but quite 'substantial'
The crankshaft was brand new!
Too big for a lawnmower, though steam powered lawnmowers did roam this earth.

PART THREE Outboards
Vintage outboards (and new ones) are always present at this festival.
The old ones are always exciting to look at

A new addition this year was a Scott Bonnar powered outboard.
I wonder what its story is?

PART FOUR - Steamy Stuff
I always find this festival visceral.
It is something to be experienced that images cannot convey.
I love the sounds and the smells!

Thanks for sharing this with us Jack, always fascinating walking through these displays and trying to imagine the hours that have been spent restoring these machines. I wonder what machines from our era that will be being restored/preserved in another 50/100 years, must be something?

Thanks Norm
You would have loved being here.

It's a massive event, and I only showed a few images.
It is nice to see the 'old crafts' continuing.

Morning Jack et al,

Would have been fun to be there!

I'm a sickly land lubber but I'm a sucker for the beautiful smooth lines of a varnished timber hull!

I've only been to taswegia once. We stayed for a week at the remodelled warehouse on Elizabeth Pier with view of the dock there and out to the ixl factory which was being refurbished at the time. That should give you some idea of how long ago it was.

I enjoyed my time in your part of the world and hope to get back sometime soon. A trip to MONA is a definite next time!

G'day prd and all proud land dwellers.
Yes, you would have loved it.

I think the formula of every two years is a good one.
It is an enormous event to organise and it is well attended.

That would have been a great area to explore the CBD.

My favourite photo of Salamanca Place is from 1950.
It depicts the local agent's Ford Prefect. This was the first model to introduce
a bluetooth curling iron and an automatic makeup mirror.

I love the advertising - very British - including the then new Ransomes MG5!

Peacock's building is still there.
It was purchased by Henry Jones' IXL empire. A noisy building.
It is said that they often held jam sessions there grin

Evening all,

Jack, the beautiful thing about that photo is that you could take a replica photo today. Salamanca still looks the same! The thing that struck me about your part of the world is that taswegians are very comfortable with their beautiful architectural past and aren't afraid to use it! You totally get that historic building should be used and that part of that is that they need to be malleable. They need to support their current use and be true to their past. You folks get that. We seem to struggle with that up here.

And yes, I spent days wearing out boot leather discovering the CBD! Walked into Arthur's Circus completely by accident! What a wonderful sight! And of course discovered Battery Point the same way. Another day I came across an amazing bookshop in a little cobblestone alleyway. Spent hours in there! The only thing missing was smokey flickering candles for lighting and the seedy Dickensian characters in top hats and black coats!

You've got a great part of the world there!

Cheers,

Yep, very nice little spot there.

I've only been to Hobart a couple of times; the first time was for a job interview with the then Aust Newsprint Mills [now owned by Norske Skog] at Boyer. They put us [there were half a dozen interviewees - and they'd booked us in adjacent seats on the flight from Melbourne!] up overnight at the Lenna hotel, and I scored a harbour view room!

Naturally, I had to order a room service brekky, to make the most of that view... cool

Cheers,
Gadge

Great photos Jack, thanks for sharing.

would have loved to have made it down, but the timing for me is a problem. maybe next year!

Am interested to see more photos of that Scott Bonnar powered outboard. The exhaust manifold is very similar to that found on a Mermaid (generally Victa or Hurricane powered), hence the additional photos may help us to understand whether it's an ex-factory build or a bitsa.

Thanks again & regards,
Spiro

Hi Spiro
It really is a big event - and I think every two years is a good formula.

I kick myself that I did not get a good photo of the SB outboard leg,
to help you understand this model. mad

I am fairly confident in saying it was not a SB factory project.

Cheers
