Homelite ST80 String Trimmer this is in as found condition hardly used and runs you will note the engine is at the bottom and handle is the fuel tank
question how old/when made

Hi Ian, what a little ripper you have there! grin
From my research, that would be most probably the first string trimmer (whipper snipper as we cal them) made by Homelite and is Part Number UT20507 and made in late 1977 or early 1978.

Hey Ian,
Those are very common across the pond over here.. I see them all the time..

They made many attachments for those, Including a blower, Brushcutter, Rototiller and some strange attachment that turned it into a miniature Lawn mower..

Those listed in order of rarity.. The blower being really common and the mower being made of unobtanium.

I would like to know how you would fit attachments to this one, the bottom plate is the muffler
The ones with the engine at the top and shaft drive yes lots of attachments
Looking at the other link Deejay there is a lot we still don't know
I wounder where the engine was on other makes for their first one
