I have a B&S 3.5 hp engine and I'm trying to get info on the engine. The only marking I can find are YBSXS-1481 HH 274459. Looking for help in trying to find model, type and code for this engine.

Hi Albert, welcome to Outdoorking.

A 3.5 hp Briggs could be either side valve or overhead valve. Where the numbers are located depends on what kind of product it is used on. Here is the B&S instruction for finding the numbers on a push-mower (that is, vertical) engine:
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/support/need-help/push-mower-engines

Here is the equivalent sheet for a snow blower (horizontal) engine:
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/support/need-help/snow-blower-engines

Here is the sheet for a general purpose small horizontal engine:
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/support/need-help/other-engines

Because your engine is only 3.5 hp, we don't need to worry about the locations of numbers on the larger engines.

If you have any problems finding your numbers from those instruction sheets, please tell us and we can find another way to get the information - we would probably need pictures of the engine as a starting point.

When we have the model, type and code we should be able to direct you to the Operator's Manual and Illustrated Parts List. If you wish we can also refer you to an appropriate B&S shop manual.

It is a horizontal engine mounted to a Gorman Rupp pump used for pumping fuels from the large underground fuel storage tanks at service stations

The numbers should be in one of the five locations shown in this information sheet:

Thanks for the info grumpy but I checked every inch of the engine and no model numbers of any kind are to be found. Here are a few pics of the engine, which may help in finding the model.

Albert, that engine obviously has some adaptations to make it more fluid-proof, and also less prone to setting fire to the oil it is pumping, and that may be the reason I don't recognise it. Because it is labelled as 3.5 hp, it may be one of the 9 cubic inch models but it could also be larger than that. Because you can't find any numbers stamped on the cowl, I think we need help from someone more familiar with specialised pump engines.

Can anyone help? AVB?

Post-Edit: Because that engine is heavily modified from the Briggs & Stratton design, presumably to make it safe and lawful to use it to pump flammable substances, this is a rare situation where in my opinion we cannot help you with advice on dismantling or re-assembling it. Of course if you can give us the manufacturer's numbers we will help with identification, but not with repair or maintenance advice.
