Hi Guys,
I have recently finished a Victa Full Crank Tilt a cut. It has received a complete once over including:
- Carby rebuilt (new primer, seals and needle)
- Pulled off the barrel, rings and piston were near perfect, installed new head and base gaskets
- new starter cup and rope. original pawls were ok.
-cutter shaft bearings were spot on, new blade was also installed.
I am a little frustrated as the unit takes 5-6goes to get it started. I checked the bottom seal and it was all good when I dismntled the machine but I am thinking something is wrong.
The other full crank mowers I fix up all start first go. At worst case always second go.

Id appreciate some suggestions as I want this unit to be easily started.

I ended up replacing the exhaust as I thought it might be blocked. It seems it may have been. The unit now starts really easily however over about 2 minutes of running the damm thing cuts out.

When I go to start it again it starts really easily. So guess I have solved one problem however now the unit is running it cuts out. I am thinking it might be an ignition module failure.......

Any thoughts? No unit no longer coughs and splutters it just cuts out randomly.

might be just loose or dirty ? try reriveting after a good clean sometimes it works (oops the module )

The edger is now spot on and not missing a beat.

I actually put the original exhaust back on after I sanded it back and added some heat paint. I initially used a spare but it appears the exhaust was causing the problem.

It now starts second pull and runs nice and smooth.

Does anybody know if the exhausts are specific to this type of model or where the two spares I tried just blocked!

Hi Pete, there are only 2 types of these mufflers, one for the normal engine and one for the high compression version which runs a different head and muffler. The only way to tell the difference between the 2 is by a small hole drilled into the outlet of the high comp version.

I am going to assume the two mufflers I tried where blocked because when I tidied up the original muffler the machine ran like a charm. It went off to a new home yesterday.

It was just a normal muffler. I could be wrong but I think my super 24 has one of the those high compression mufflers and the engine has a spacer between the head and the block.

Funny thing my parents in law's picked up another egdger, same model for $5 bucks from the markets for me. Good score I thought. This one set me back $22 on ebay. $5 is even better!

was looking for a place to ask my question about the very same edger as Peter's.
In mine was an original plug ref#HA25288. I was delighted to have an original Victa plug but then noticed it was a long electrode type like in brush cutters. Is this the correct plug or do I just put in a CJ8?

To the best of my knowledge with a cj8 or equivilant the engine should run with no problem.
I put these in all the edgers of this model and haven't had a problem.
The 2 stroke masters should chime in and give you more re-asurance.

That plug has more nostalgic value than it does purpose, so i'd keep that just as a collectors piece. All the later 2 strokes(about post 1970) run a CJ8.

I do appreciate your advice. (Maybe I could have it encased in plastic & put it in my wife's china cabinet)

I also have the same edger as Peter's. I'm not getting any spark :( What should i look at next?

Jaffa, Can I post an addition to this post please? I have come across the most original condition (as new) later model like yours but a power torque. Before I try selling it there is one thing that I need some advice on. When running, some fuel is being blown out of the fuel cap. (obviously through the carby) but I do not understand the physics here guys. Any one help old Seedy. Thanks to the Masters.
