Hi Jonesy, the B & S was manufactured on the 27th October 1989. If that is the original engine, that will give you a rough idea of its age.

Thanks Deejay, that would probably be about right from what I have been able to find on the Cox, anyone know anything about the Snapper?

Well got the old Cox ticking over OK now, just need to put another maggi in as it is not putting out any charge for the battery, I've got a spare from the 11hp that was stuffed on the Victa transmatic that should be good I hope, what a weapon of a machine, the grass is too wet to even walk on at the moment but cant wait to test it cutting.

jonesy, I think it is rare for Briggs alternators to fail, but quite common for the diode in the output lead (just near the connector at the free end) to fail. If you have a voltmeter, just disconnect the Briggs engine's charging wire at the plastic connector where it attaches to the ride-on's wiring harness. Probe the engine lead on the upstream side of the diode with the engine running and see if you detect AC voltage. If you have AC upstream of the diode, chances are the alternator is OK. Then connect a DC ammeter on 10 amp range between the engine's charging wire and the ride-on's wiring harness. Start the engine and see if there is current passing through from the engine to the mower's harness. Remember, you will probably only see 2 Amps with the engine at maximum speed, depending which model alternator you have. Most of them are only rated at 2-3 Amps.

Hi Jonesy, re: your Snapper....we used to have a moderator here (Gmax) that used to be an aficionado of Snapper ride-ons, you may like to trawl through some of the earlier ride-on threads....some useful info may be found there.

Well Grumpy I was only going by what the bloke that gave me the Cox that it was not putting out charge but I did what you said and it is putting out 4 amps by my meter, so will leave it be, I was having a bit of trouble fine tuning it and then I noticed a bit of slop in the throttle butterfly shaft so I changed the whole carby out and is running well now even starting off the pull starter easily, every thing seems to work well on the old girl, I love the alloy wheels, would like to see it done up but it would be a big job and dont think I will have the time or the room for a while.

Sounds as if things are moving forward nicely, jonesy. If you just use it occasionally, you'll fairly quickly do one of three things: start fixing its minor flaws, decide it deserves a major tidy up, or lose interest and sell it off as a goer. Either way, you've made something out of nothing, and should feel some satisfaction from that.
