The victa 2 stroke corsair which has a powertorque engine leaked petrol from the primer cap. I thought i'd change the primer cap and put in a new needle as well. So got a new cap and installed it but it also leaks once i turn on the fuel tap. Reinstalled it again and it started to leak again. It took another couple of goes to get it to stop leaking. The needle was inserted correctly, the primer cap was perfectly horizontal and the jet screw was securely on. Is there some trick to doing this properly? I have on at least a couple of occassions destroyed the jet screw by overtightening it because there was still some leaking.

Was it a genuine or aftermarket (cheap eBay and sometimes sold in shops) primer cap? The non genuine ones are rubbish and never seal.

Bought from mower shop, looks genuine.

Tiger, sorry if my question is obvious, but did you replace the oring?
The G4/LM carby's normally seal up pretty good when a new primer/oring is fitted. Have a look around the carby body and check it for cracks and the fuel line in case its leaking and running down the primer face and dripping off the bottom.

Bought a new o-ring and installed it. No cracks that i can see in the carby body or in fuel line.

I agree with Joe the aftermarket ones are crap and dont seem to seal well at all just looking at them you can see they are not flat to start with,It could be that you have one of these...Most of the mower shops around here sell the cheap aftermarket one, for the same price of the real thing too...

I also agree, it is never good when you have to put the old primer cap on to slow the leak.

Are there any distinguishing features that separate the genuine caps from the non-genuine ones? Just wondering could you lap these primer caps on sadpaper on glass to flatten them?

The genuine primer caps have a part number moulded on the face, usually starts with CH...... the non genuine ones generally dont

This has happened to me quite a bit however I have always been able to seal the carby with a new cap and seal.

Can I suggest that before you attempt to tighten the jet into the carby you get the primer cap and o ring into the correct position applying equal amounts of force around the perimeter of the cap to maintain position.

It might sound silly but for the stubborn caps I apply four fingers evenly around the cap before I attempt to screw in the jet. The jet doesnt need to be screwed in overly tight. Too tight and you will strip the thread.


Also make sure you o ring isnt twisted when you install it on the cap.

Thanks fellas for your thoughts so far. I'm at work at the moment and can't see the mower but I rang the mower shop and they said it was a genuine part.
Peter, good advice, I did manage to get the thing on and it stopped leaking but as I said, it took 3 or 4 attempts before it worked. I do also remember that when we use to get the mower serviced by a "professional" that once it came back and it would leak at the bottom of the cap, the pro said it was just the way these carbys were and that as long as I always closed the fuel tap after finishing mowing that I wouldn't lose much fuel .
