Hi guys
I am having trouble with a top mount starter on a vc mustang I found whilst down the coast on the weekend. I have rewound the spring and it has good recoil but for some reason it won't grip on the starter bucket. I have read the manual and made sure it is back together right however I must be doing something stupid. I have had a lot of luck with the power torque starters and side mount starters however this one has me stumped.

Help would be appreciated as it's making me feel silly!

Any news on this one guys? It still has me stumpted.

Try Taking the Starter off the engine and then Pulling it.

You should see two small Metal hooks Swing out when its pulled and go back in when the cord rewinds..

If its not doing that, Well... it looks as if you need to repair/buy a new Pull starter

Hi Peter, try putting the pawl assembly the other way, that is take out the centre screw and flip it over, if its on backwards it wont "throw out" when you pull the cord. While you're there check the friction washers are present and intact, they should be about 1-1.5mm thick. Also make sure the friction washers are clean and dry and not lubed up in any way. Check the cup is also clean and dry and give the inside a light rub with some emery paper.

Some news........ The mustang goes very well surprisingly!
The starter must be warn. I have to pull it slowly until I feel it engage and then start it like a normal mower.... Or is this a normal feature of the top mount starter?

The mower is one for the collection I think and to occasionally mow the lawn with.

The pawls swing out as they should. I thought the bucket might be warn. I did clean it with some fine sandpaper.

The starter cup or the edges of the pawls might be worn, if the pawls dont have a fairly square edge they cannot bite into the starter cup to turn it.

I have checked the pawls and they have fairly square edges so I am assuming the starter cup is warn. I will try and source a second hand cup and see how it goes.
