Hi Boony, and a warm welcome to the OutdoorKing forum. It's great to have another Scott Bonnar owner on board. grin
For us to be able to help you with dating your Scotties, we will need you to post some pics of each machine. Without these we would be just flying blind.
Please include one pic of the front of the machine (cylinder reel) and one of each with the chain-case cover removed. Please also include info from the ID model plate affixed to the mower and also the complete string of numbers stamped into the air cowling of the Briggs engines. wink
Once again Boony, :welcome:

Both your engines are 2 hp Briggs and Strattons, Model 60102. That is the normal post-Kirby-Lauson engine for the narrower SB45s, and was quite a nice engine at the time. The time was 9 June 1969 for the first one and 14 May 1969 for the second one - a very closely matched pair. The blades of the reel you have shown look a bit wavy, so it has probably had some bad luck in its life, but not necessarily anything serious. The blades have plenty of meat left on them and have probably never been sharpened. The sprockets do not look seriously worn. The chains are under-lubricated and probably a bit rusty, so they will need some basic cleaning and lubricating, during which you can easily check them for wear. I can't see the engine mounting deck in the pictures of the assembled mower. The disassembled mower has a one piece deck, which is consistent with it being an early SB45.

I'll leave the more technical comments to Deejay, who is a serious SB guy.

Hi again Boony, I have just done some research for you...your 2, 14 inch Scotty 45's are quite early machines, both solid one piece engine deck and given the date of manufacture (thanks grumpy) being May and June 1969 would, considering freight time from USA, possibly mated with the chassis late 69 or early 1970.

Please note; all 14 inch Scotty's had the 2HP silver Briggs and Stratton, from the date first introduced in 1968.
The 17 inch machines had the Kirby-Tecumseh HK 25 2.5HP engines, carried over from the Model 33, and later the HK 30, 3HP engine.

Your 17 inch machine is also an early machine; (prior to 1973) with the horizontal chain-case screws, metal screws for the grass deflector, solid engine deck and will have the front roller with the alloy end caps riveted in. I can't tell you much more as it is disassembled. wink

So we were right about the Kirby model, it is a HK25...I see that you are considering s Briggs 550; don't forget that Honda make an ideal engine replacement as well... the GX120 is made in Japan and seems to be a popular choice. wink
Looking forward to seeing some more pics,

Looks like a good restoration under way you have going, looking forward to seeing the finished product.

If you would consider selling and posting the old kirby engine I would be interested, I have the same engine on my rotary hoe and it would be great to have a set of spares for it. cheers joe.
