Hi I'm new to the forum, I just rebuilt my dad's powertorque Victa and I can't get it started.. I am not an engine novice I have rebuilt motor bikes, diesels and car engines but this one has me stumped!!!! Here is what I have done..
The mower is about 16 years old, it ran beautifully but over the last few months it started to get louder and louder.. I assumed it was a crank bearing.. upon inspection the roller bearing had self destructed.. As it was for my dear Dad I decided to give it the full go over so it would last him another 15 years...

I got a new cylinder, piston/rings, new decompressor.. new o rings air filter and spark plug...

When I first got it back together I did not put the cut out switch back on.. it started first pop and ran well for a minute or so then died.. I assumed I has the tubes all wrong, connected them the right way and pulled the carby off to check it over and put the cut out back in... since then it will not run at all... I have great spark, it seems to be getting plenty of fuel.. I even took the decompressor out and pulled it over with flames coming out the decompressor hole.. I have tried fuel down the spark hole.. heating it up with a hot air gun to dry it out.. nothing is working it's just dead... I am completely stumped!!!.... I also have an older version of the same mower of my own so I swapped carbies over still no go.. and I just mowed the entire lawn with my mower and dad's carby with out a problem... Any ideas??? Don't want to buy a new coil if I don't have to as it seems this one is fine.. strong spark, oh and I have the cut off disconnected so it's not that...
ANY IDEAS???? PLEASE??

Have you tried another plug yet? it might be sparking outside the cylinder, but under compression they can be quite sensitive, I have even had new plugs that are faulty.

yeah I tried the plug that was previously working in it.. then the new plug I just put in my brush cutter which works well in the brush cutter...

Ok so we got fuel, air, spark and ignition clearly....I agree with Joe Re: ignition is dodgy; I can only suggest check the earthing of the ignitor and coil etc and check the timing for may have a sheared Key on the flywheel or loose (I doubt it, but clutching at straws here)? or a wire that has rubbed through etc.

Try winding it over in the dark and look / listen for HT jumping....(with the spark plug in, under compression load)

As they dont have a flywheel key as such its unlikely to be the issue, but it would be worth popping the exhaust off quickly and having a peek to see if there has been any mechanical failure of the new bits.

Yeah I haven't had the exhaust off but I have opend the starter case and everything is fine in there.. it turns over smoothly and there is loads of compression... will try again this weekend and see what I can come up with.. seems to me that if I put fuel down the plug hole it should kick at least a few times but it's just not happening.. very weird.. maybe it has been flooded.. I'll leave it all open for a day and try again.. thanks for the help.

well I pulled the engine off the mower again and pulled the flywheel off.. bingo! you were right there is no keyway but there is a flatspot where it sits on the crank.. it had burred round! I must not have had the cutting plate done up tight enough.. I have used some quick steel and will try and file it up so that the timing is right again.. if not will have to get a new flywheel.... I would never had of guessed that could happen!!!

So I fixed it and it ran beautifully but the quick steel only lasted a few minets... now have to track down an old flywheel... I'll post up in wanted section.. thanks guys
