Hello any help much appreciated.
Before I go any further, I was after some advice on the bore of this engine. Is it too scored?[Linked Image]

In my opinion it is far too scored to use, and so is the piston. The bore might clean up with honing, but heavy honing ruins the piston fit, which shortens ring life, increases blow-by, and generally gives an inferior result compared with either reboring and fitting an oversize piston, or getting a better cylinder and piston second-hand.

Thanks Grumpy for your response.
For something to try, could I? lightly sand the scouring in the bore, put in the best second hand piston and rings I have.
I will make the fuel mix rich, say 20:1 and test run?
With the intention of the rings cleaning the bore up.

I can try this & let you all know how it goes.

Ouch!!!!.That is one poor Tornado:(.Grumpy just said it all!Rebore or SH barrel Mark:)Id not dare tell you what not to try,BUT...Sanding is only gonna make it even bigger,Blow by will be massive and while the rings might feel they are giving compression when you first fit them,after the first run it will be just about gone:(Its a good model and maybee worth spending a couple of dollars,get the bore OS and do the rest yourself?Good luck:)

I would personally junk that block and get an older australian made block for it, even if you went O/S on that block you have, it is still a chinese cast block and much softer than an australian cast one.

A lot of whats on the bore will be transfer off the piston.

I would hone it and see how it comes up, but only if nothing better was about.


The piston i would bin if you cant get the rings out in one piece. That one looks pretty gone. If you had too you could clean it up.

You can get a new piston with rings for under $50 so its hardly worth messing about with anything sub par.

If it were my I would as Joe said get the aussie made block.If not I would rebore it and put in an oversize piston.Sanding it wouldn't work scores to deep and I'm thinking if you could get it to anything it would only lose it's roundness and turn it more into an oval shape.Which would lose compression.I had two similar engines here not long ago,but they weren't as new or as good.I just tossed one mower and the newer one I just put a second hand engine on.
