I have an old Briggs 5 HP motor on my son's go cart and the starter rope broke. How do I fix it?

Buy a new starter rope or if you have some suitable rope you can use that. open the starter and be careful the recoil spring does not fly out and hit you. remove the spring and the rope. wind the new rope in and then wind the spring and put it in the starter, again taking care, and close the starter up. pull the starter rope through the little hole and attach your handle.
To start motor, turn on fuel and pull starter cord.

Hi Jackoaznd John How did you go fixing that starter rope. You were a bit vague as to which type of starter it was. I think there is a better way than descrobed by Jacko, God Bless Him All The Same, ,but lets know how you got on , It is dissapointing at times to see a topic just fizzle out when so much could be learned bu so many if the topic was carried out to its full and final conclusion.
When I first came accross the problem of fitting the rope and or springs I felt the same way as most other peapole but when folling the Briggs method plus a couple of additions ,this task is really really simple.

Joe, I'm only 15 so im just learning about repairing. When I was giving the instructions I was talking about a Briggs and Stratton 3.5 HP 4 stroke. If you could give me better starter rope repair instructions it would be a good lesson for me.

Hi Jacko Re the startyer off your Briggs. You still have not made clear as to which type of starter you have. .Depends on the model. Is it a vertical pull where the starter is a separate entity bol;ted on with 2 bolts or a horizontal pull mounted into the blower housing???????? Joe

The starter I was talking about was a vertical pull which is in a separate housing.

Hi Jacko Sorry not to have repliesd re your Vertical pull starter. I have been trying to remember the easy way to replace the rope but will have to go and get an ols starter to refresh the brain box, One thing is important .If the rope broke and the starter rewound back in with a lot of speed it is most likely thet the end of the spring will have over run and be bent over where it attaches to the centre post. remove the plastic cover carefully as the spring may fly out. Have a look at the inner end, They can most times be staightened out as the end is left soft at time of manufacture. Will be back in touch but not till next week as I am moving house and will not have phoneline till then JOe
