I have a utility mower powered by a B&S motor that is just amazing. It is a 4 HP 2 stroke that just goes and goes and starts every time, even when it is 'sick'. It is onto its 2nd body (or 3rd body - it was very second hand when I purchased it in 1990) and is not something I will part with but I have never been able to find another one. Motor numbers read: 096722-0205-01-870223. The B&S site finally yielded a manual etc when I substituted 0205-01 with 0205-99. It is a series 96700 motor.

I have a few B&S 4 stroke motors and a few bodies I could swap or will look at buying if anyone can point me in the right direction. Like I said I have never seen another motor like this one and I have scrounged a lot of tips and trawled a lot of web sites over the years.

The 2 stroke was made by Komatsu under an agreement with Briggs, beginning in 1987. The venture was uneconomic and didn't persist for very long, so the engines are moderately uncommon but not rare. It does seem to be regarded as a decent engine, comparable for example with the Suzuki and Kawasaki 2 stroke mower engines. If you link "Komatsu Zenoah" with Briggs when you search, you should find more information.

They are about. Ive seen a few on eBay.

One on a rusted out big bob.
One on a talon base. (nice tennants improvement)
And one on another utility of some sort
Another one on a Colt ride on.


I wanted one of those motors to put on a colt. I didnt by any of the ones mentioned above as the sellers all wanted what i considered too much.
I ended up grabbing a Suzuki instead.

While you are looking keep an eye out for a Suzuki or Yamaha 2 stroke mower engine. Both have an excellent reputation as well.



If you have a decent 3 leg puller swapping and changine engines and blade bosses is no big deal.
