ive come to the conclusion that its not worth selling hole mowers anymore rather i end up keeping them for parts and using them myself. ill sell the odd one to someone i know but the fact is that cheep mowers are bought buy people who generally dont care and run them over a lump of 3" pipe and want there money back!
as to the design of the boss ide say its to do with the cnc machining process. Ive often done it as a point to measure from or in other words a datum.
the reason its a blind hole is so the boss is held tight against the crankshaft. other types of boss are pulled against the blade plate with independent bolts but if that one didn't have the flange then the boss itself could slip and slide up and down the crankshaft and not even contact the blade plate.
as to the $25 my friend, its your first parts mower! i have heaps of things laying around that are not fixable but become a constant and invaluable source of parts, everything from power tools to 89' magna transaxel.

jay, I still suspect that blade boss is made in two parts, with a screw-in end cap that is not meant to be removed after it is assembled at the factory. That would make it much easier to make, and the screwdriver slot must have some purpose. You could probably tell by looking inside the boss from the open (crankshaft) end - if I'm right there would probably be some thread visible at the plugged end.
