Hi guys

I have been given a Rover Shredder - 95213 and it won't run, so I have started stripping it down to fix it.

Briggs & Stratton 5hp Engine

Model Number:- 130902
Type:- 1175 01
Code:- 85041707

As the code starts with 85 I think it's an 1985 model?

The Carby needs a rebuild.

I pulled the head off to check things out and found the valves tops were wet with oil.
The bore looks Ok and looks like it may have been honed at some stage and the cross hatchings are still evident.

So I pulled the valves out to check the faces and seats, etc.
I cleaned the seats and the valve faces but there is a bit of wear on the exhaust valve shaft and black oil in the exhaust port area of the block.
My finger nail catches on it on one side of the shaft.
So I'm thinking it will need to be drilled and a guide fitted, with a new exhaust valve fitted.

Should I do both valves and a hone & re-ring while the engine is stripped down?

Went to chat at my local mower shop (Village Mowers @ Ingleburn in Southwest Sydney) and asked about a replacement engine or should I fix the one I have.

I was told no new engine has a crankshaft strong enough to drive the 3 blades, so rebuild the one I have.

I was verbally quoted the following prices, if I do the strip down and rebuild and they supply the parts. They will drill out & fit the valve guides.

Full Gasket Set = $140.00
Drill out & fit new guides = $60.00
New Valves = $20.00 each
Hone and new rings = $60.00

But to send them an email and they will do a proper quote.

Do these prices seem OK and does the gasket set come with the carby gasket set as well?

Here's a photo of the block after the head was removed:-

Also it appears I have stuffed up and not taken note of which valve spring goes where as both are different lengths.

Can anyone please let me know which is which:-

Thanks in advance...

Hi Steve,

Up to you if you think it's worth fixing ,I've been given at least 5 Rover Shredders with 5 hp Briggs motors
and I repaired one and sold it for $200 ,the cost of the repair $10 ,the other 4 I threw out as they
were blowing smoke .

Sometime you can pickup an old 5 hp Rover mower for $50 with a good motor that you
could swap into the shredder.

As far a I know the different length spring (short spring) is from the hot side of the motor being the exhaust
spring ,the constant heat and age of the spring causes the spring to loose tension thus ending up with
one shorter spring but I'm not a Briggs and Stratton mechanic so may need someone else's opinion here.

Cheers
Max.

I personally would just be looking for another engine.

I am surprised they suggested doing valve guides, I thought that was a bit of a lost art these days.

That pricing seems way off to me, doing a set of guides, then re cutting seats and lapping new valves in is at least an hours work, strip clean and hone is another, so I wouldnt be trusting that, but then they have quoted you $140 for a gasket set available on ebay for $26.. seems fishy..

No the gasket set wont have carby gaskets, so to rebuild that will be extra again. I would be very surprised if they were under $500 for the whole job.
