Hello ODK history lovers
The Boundy Manufacturing Company made an important
contribution to rotary mower production in the 1950s.

Boundy was part of a small, elite group of AUS rotary makers
that made the whole shebang – the engine and the chassis!

Boundy ran a two-model policy at that time – a 15” Lawn Cub,
and an 18” Lawn Patrol.

However, for two seasons, 1956-57 and 1957-58, the Lawn Patrol
became the Lawn Scout.

It is open to speculation as to why there was a name change
and then a return to the original name. Any ideas?

There were two versions of the Lawn Scout: the first model
(1956-57), and then the Lawn Scout Deluxe (1957-58).



The main difference between the Scout and the Scout De Luxe was
with the Boundy engine. Both had the unique Boundy ignition system,
but the Deluxe introduced the fan-forced cooling of the new
‘Gold Cheetah’ engine.

PART TWO – Lawn Scout Features
The Lawn Scout was a sophisticated mower with some unique features,
the most noticeable being the new Boundy engine – the ‘Gold Cheetah’
[see Related Reading].

In this 1957 newsprint advertisement (supplied by member Dodegy)
we see a nice summary of what Boundy considered the Top 8 features.



Note that the engine is represented as being an export success.
Note the exhaust port could be ‘de-coked’ in 60 seconds!

Another noteworthy feature was the handle rope guide that
converted a horizontal lanyard cord start into one with a vertical pull action.

PART THREE – Operator Instructions
This Operator Manual covers the Lawn Scout De-luxe.

It’s a brief bi-fold that manages to summarise operation to two pages.

I love the warning: “Never attempt to lift your mower from the ground
with the mower running.” Sensible advice that suggests average folks
were no more attuned to operating dangerous machinery then as they
are now.

There is a lot of period information - probably brought about by using
engine oils in a fuel mix – that brought attention to carburettion …
