Hello all,

Just after some help identifying a weed I have growing in my lawn. My lawn is Kikyu and I took some of the weed to my local lawn place and they sold me a product called Lawn Perfect to kill the weeds. It seems to work OK on the other weeds in my lawn but it does very little to the weed I've got pictured.

I live in Geelong, Victoria and have seen the weed growing all over my area.

I've taken to spot killing it with Roundup and weeding by hand. I'm on an acre block but luckily the weed now only grows in less than a quarter of the block.

I've included a couple of pics. Can anyone tell me what it is and what product may be effective in eradicating it?

Thanks,
Andrew.

Not sure what that is, but a steam gun, or whatever you call it, should kill each one if you have the time to walk around.

I don't know it's name but I do know it's a pain in the grass to get rid of. Might be a variety of Spurge?

Whilst getting my Father in Law's place ready for the season, his SWB was infested with it to the point the Buffalo is at risk of not coming back. Funny part of the story - he gets a guy into mow every so often and that bloke accused me of killing the SWB!! No mention about letting the weeds grow over the stuff he was supposed to be mowing...

Initially I attacked it Dicamba M and it did Zero. The next treatment was a Bromoxynil/MCPA combo called "Buffalo" by Spitfire and whilst it knocked it back, death was not assured. I spot sprayed with a product from David Gray's range two weekends ago, so I'll post an update when I see it this weekend.

Best to spot-spray with Kik and SWB rather than blanket spray..

I'm sure I've got it in my collection...........
We're getting weeds from all over the world. I like to spray with weed and feed once a year, and hand pull out after a few days of rain...
We have a giant bindi up here, has ruined many parks..........
I mowed a yard full of it dry millions of prickles.
Threw my old clogs in a bin before I got home, then took a wire brush out to the mower wheels in the trailer so I would not add another weed to my collection..
good luck

Hard to identify weeds without actually seeing them (I meant in real life), but it does look very familiar and one I may have battled a few weeks ago.

Found this partly helpful https://www.yates.com.au/product/yates-buffalo-pro

Speedy, that what always annoys me with mower guys mowing 10+ yards a day, they spread that many weeds its not funny

All it takes is one bit of seed between the blade and blade bolt and off it goes.

Ah yes ... Titanica Falsus.

Return of the Hinze, I believe.

You have to admit, Clive carries ballast.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I'll stay out of the politics, I'm pretty sure my leanings would ruffle a few feathers in here.

As for the weed, given how much of it I see around Geelong I'm really suprised it can't definitively identify it. I found a Vic government website, probably department of agriculture or whatever they call themselves these days, and using their identification tool I still wasn't able to find anything close.

I'll continue on with my spot spraying and hand weeding strategy, luckily as I mentioned above I've managed to reduce it down to about 1/8 of my acre block and I'm slowly winning the battle.

As for the Lawn Perfect herbicide that was recommended to me, it hasn't really impressed me. I've been using it on my property in Geelong and another block I've got down the highways in the Otways and it hasn't really been effective on the weeds on either property. I'm being quite careful to mix it at the recommended ratio and apply it over the correct area.

Can anyone recommend a general broadleaf herbicide that would work well regardless of which area I would be using it in?

G'day folks,

Have been a bit 'in radio silence' this past week due to various IT issues; however, this is the go-to Oz weed ID site: https://weeds.org.au/

Cheers,
Gadge

sb30inch,

I haven't actually seen the weed have any flowers. Not to say it hasn't but I've never seen any. I did some searching on the weed you named and it's similar in looks but pretty sure it's not what I've got especially since I've never seen my weed have a white flower.

Gadge, thanks for the link. I've been in to have a look and I'm still working my way through the listings. It doesn't help that I don't know what the characteristic terms mean when specifying and trying to narrow the search down but I'll keep looking.

Here's some weeds I pulled out from 1 square metre of lawn. Included are these ones that need quite a bit of wriggling to pull out.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!
