How to Start a Trimmer or Chainsaw

Using a trimmer or chainsaw can be a difficult task if youre unfamiliar with the tool. Make the most out of your equipment by learning how to start a chainsaw or trimmer the right way.
How to Start a Chainsaw
Here are the steps to follow when you want to start your chainsaw:

Move the choke lever to the full position

Hold or lock the throttle in the on position

Move the unit to the on position which is usually indicated by the symbol I.

If your chainsaw has a primer bulb, then depress it about 4-5 times in order to draw fuel from the fuel tank into the carburettor; This will remove any air from the fuel lines.

If your chainsaw has a step-through rear handle, then you need to set the tool on the ground, then place the toe of your shoe through the handle, and hold the handlebar with your left hand. If your chainsaw does not have the step-through rear handle, then just hold the handlebar and firmly press the bottom of the chainsaw against the ground.

Finally, make short, brisk pulls on the starter rope until you hear the engine start. You should pull the starter rope anywhere from 1-6 times. Any more than 10 and the chainsaw may be flooded or have other problems.

How to Start a Flooded Chainsaw or Trimmer

When you want to start a flooded chainsaw or trimmer, you may want to take the following steps:

Push the choke lever all the way in, and squeeze the throttle trigger completely

Pull the starter rope about 10-12 times
If the chainsaw or trimmer does not start after the first two steps, then:

Pull out the choke lever and squeeze the trigger completely

Pull the starter rope until the engine tries to start and push the choke lever in halfway

Pull starter rope until the unit starts

If you still are unable to get your flooded chainsaw or trimmer to start after these steps, then bring the unit into a local service centre or post on the forum for more help.

I have this problem with my Stihl 08s, takes about 15 pulls to start,(not flooding) fuel filter & spark is ok.
Time for a carby kit smirk
