G'day everyone,

I have installed a Victa 2 stroke fuel tap on a scrap yard find a while ago. Anyway what I noticed is there is a very slow seeping leak of petrol from the tank that looks like it's coming from the thread area where the tap screws into the bottom of the tank.

I have some of that plumbers white teflon thread seal tape here but I don't know if this stuff is suited for sealing up threads that are in contact with petrol.

I also have some old Permatex Number 3 soft setting sealant in the shed that I used many years ago to seal up water pump bolts and gaskets on vehicles. Again I don't know if this stuff is suitable for threads in contact with petrol.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I haven't used either of the above for leaks, but JB Tank Weld certainly works. Just don't expect to be able to remove the tap in future...

Thanks for that mate I actually did a search on fuel fitting sealants and it seems that the old Permatex Number 3 that I have sitting in the shed is also resistant to fuels. It has been years since I used this stuff when I replaced automotive water pumps and I thought it was only resistant to oil and coolants but not fuel. I guess i'll give this stuff a go when I remove and replace the fuel tap on the old Victa 2 stroke lawnmower. At least it's a soft setting sealant so hopefully I can one day again unscrew and remove the fuel tap if I ever need to replace it.

I could possibly try that but this is on that red Victa Pace PT2 scrap find that had the broken off fuel tap when I found it. Maybe the thread is slightly damaged or a tad wider than what it's meant to be.

I could have also possibly fitted the tap while viewing the inside of the tank as to get the lowest part of the fuel filter just near the bottom of the tank so you can use up all the fuel near the bottom of the tank. I could probably go in a few more turns but I think then the lower part of the filter will sit slightly higher in the tank. It's not really much though and would probably still work ok.

I might just end up fitting the new fuel tap that I ordered from Bunnings on this mower and see how it runs.
