I think I have solved my problem now. The original primer bulb in the machine was not in the correct way nor was the check valve in working order. When I replaced the bulb I stuck it in with the same orientation as the original one (without double checking the direction of flow blush ). This was alowing fuel to flow directly into the carby and was not priming the rest of the system properly.
