The exact thickness usually depends on the specific fit and tolerances required by your application Ian.

Thinner is usually better for fine adjustments: A shim that is too thick can cause misalignment, excessive preload, or bearing damage.

Common shim thickness is 1, 2 ,3 ,5, 10, thousandths of an inch.

If you can fit a 10 thou thick shim in start with that. Greenfield use a 10 thou thick shim.

It's just that you don't want end float and you don't want pre load on the bearings.

Repco sells shim steel 6 inches by 6 inches ,you get a few different thicknesses but it's about $79. and you can cut
your own from that.

It's a lot cheaper to buy from eBay and they have lots of shim washers all different sizes and thicknesses ,so you just
measure the shaft and the outer bearing ,if you can't find a shim washer to fit in you will need to buy the shim steel
sheets and cut your own.

Greenfield have the shim in the same position, I haven't measured the Rover to see if you can use the Greenfield shim
but the Greenfield shim is about $5 each ,possibly cheaper online.

There are a lot of Greenfield shims online using google. GT 00539 shim sale
