This was my question, and I finally found a dealer that was able and willing to answer. In the old days, standard motor oil was used with gasoline. The mechanic said that the old rule of thumb was to add an 8 ounce coke bottle of oil to a gallon of gas (128oz/8oz, or 16/1). Modern 2 cycle lubricants are better, so less oil is needed. I was told that 40/1 was probably OK. I won't run less oil than 32/1, and will probably run 24/1 on my next mix.....just because I don't ever want to buy another saw if I only use it for 10 hours a year.
