Final post here to show Cox differential on the 25K96 model, circa 1996-8.Took her apart as I wasn't sure if it was lubed up and there's no way of telling, there was HT grease there but the gears teeth were dry so topped it off with Veedol semi liquid grease.Everything looked good in there,2 bushes, one bronze and one small sealed bearing, nice solid unit.So I can rest easy now knowing that's lubed.

Cox 12HP 09M7 ride on - cutter brake, mystery part

Thanks Max.
I spent some time on it this morning and have answered both of my questions, as follows:
1. The reason for the odd configuration of the cutter brake bell crank was that the threaded rod that goes to the front of the mower and back into the U piece that attaches to the top of the bell crank had been pulled so hard the spring had bound and the end of the rod had been pulled out of its hole and was jammed against the cross piece. Easily fixed once it was out.
2. The plate with the threaded holes is an Engine Mounting Bolt Plate. The engine mount bolts go down beneath the engine deck and screw into it. Need some Loctite for next time. If there is enough clearance I'm going to get longer bolts so I can put Nyloc nuts on so it can never vibrate loose again.
Cheers
Doug

Ok for anyone coming behind me- the "new generation" clutch cone is way easier to replace than older models (this is 2005 so not young ). They put a bolt at the end of the clutch shaft underneath - no mk,ore wreatlin to take the unit apart. Push the belt idler wheel in and release the belt, remove the clutch linkage - remove the single bolt that holds the clutch yoke on and the whole assembly drops out on the rear right hand side. Really so much easier that it used to be
