Victa chassis - B&S shaft length

Hi BT,

The 2-inch shaft length depends on the motor used on the base. As you know, if you use a 2-inch shaft on an old Victa base with a Sprint motor (Briggs), the petrol tank can hit the discharge ramp on the base. This is why older mowers had the motors turned with the exhaust facing the operator—so the tank wouldn’t interfere with the base. Otherwise, you would need a longer crank and a spacer to lift the motor, then rotate it so
the tank is on the right side.

I forgot I picked up a Tornado 4 stroke the other day ,it's 70 mm the crank length.

They didn't need to lift the engine on a Tornado for the tank to clear the discharge ramp, as the discharge ramp is lower on the Tornado compared to other Victa bases. This provided enough clearance for the tank when using the Sprint-type motor.

Cheers
Max.

While I had the correct nut and bolt, without the associated washers I wasn't happy with how the blades were mounted on the disk. These things are dangerous as it is without having the blades secured as intended.

And finally, the replacement filter housing was the final piece of the puzzle, I now have a fully functioning Victa 18 Special..........................

At some point, I'll need to look at the starter as it's not always recoiling. When you look at repairing your starter and if your bothered you can buy new reproduction rubber handle covers in either black or green for $50 from a bloke in Sydney.

I don't suppose you have a website link?

Here's the photos I couldn't PM them.

Brilliant!!
Thanks Max, I was given the electronic module free to replace the points but it was for a 160cc unit and my old thing is the 125, I just couldn't get it to do anything.
Not a major problem, I'll put it on the Victa utility a friend gave me (he owns the local mower shop and they give me most parts free). I'll grab the proper unit one day when I remember.
It is funny though, the Mayfair sat under my house in 4 inches of water for 2-3 years untouched. I puled it out one day, put fresh fuel in it, primed the carburettor, would the handle 4 times and it started immediately, amazing old mowers.
I'm keen to get onto the Victa 18s I was given and another old unit from around 1960 with the toe cutter deck but not stamped as the Victa 18. it has a square fuel tank and the Victa 18 pull start unit.
Though I mostly collect old camera (and an occasional radio/gramophone) I love old stuff, it was made with pride and quality unseen in todays industries.
