As said those Homelite style heads push nuts has to be levered out or cut. What I use now is a modified small flat tip screwdriver that bent into a semi circle ( around 90 degree arc) as to slip under the nut to get to the catch fingers and lift them up as I go around the push nut so I can save the nut for reuse. Once you get it off then you can remove the adapter if needed just note that many of these are NLA separately. Replacement of the same style usually have a new push nut in the packaging or at least it is that way here.

I even use the same style tool to get the push nuts on the MTD front spindle axles off

Thank's guys..
I finally got around to cleaning the crud off the head yesterday... To my surprise, It seems that the flanges that hold a blade are still with it... Seeing that none of my other shaft trimmers have their flanges... this machine will be fitted with a blade.
I would assume that the threaded adaptor is replaced with a nut...in this case an M8 x 1.0 LH thread.

btw..The HK-18 on Leon's page is different to mine as far as the head and carby (Jap)

Ken

Homelite trimmer ..is this right?

The TB is basically the same design as the MTDs. The last one I attempted to repair which was a blower ran fine until I took it out tested it. With running at operating speed I went out to the end of my driveway. I didn't get turn around for the return trip before it started failing.

Well I took it back to shop and disassemble it. The piston and cylinder was badly scored from the lack of oiling. I was fairly certain this was the problem before I even took it apart but wanted to verify my diagnosis.

I personally I don't even waste my time on these MTD, Ryobi, and Troy Bilt units anymore. They are use it until broken and replace units. What a shame the engineering is so lousy. If they resolve the oiling problems then they would be a great little engine. Just not repairable without a press and parts.

Thanks for the offer mate, but I think I will give it a miss as it is not suitable for my use (5acres) and I was only going to put it on ebay if the $ cost to repair was worth it.

As others have suggested you can buy a new cheapy for around $90, so it's not worth the effort.

Again thanks for the offer.

Regards
Buckets
